Cottage Life

It was a strange summer for us. We usually spend a lot of time at our cottage near Gracefield, Quebec, but this year that just didn’t happen. John had his knee replacement on June 3. He had hoped for a quick recovery. He is familiar with pain. He has done a number of marathons and even some Ironman competitions. He once fractured his leg during a race but didn’t stop till he crossed the finish line.

He found the recovery from knee surgery pretty darn painful (not to mention the complication of not being able to urinate for a month!). To get from the cottage to our lake we have to go down a steep hill. He found that he just couldn’t manage the hill this summer. The“toilet” is a trip to the outhouse at the back. He found that wasn’t the most pleasant place to hobble to in his time of need. John and I did have a birthday celebration for me at our cottage but other than that we stayed close to the Deep.

We finally made a trip to our cottage last week and spent 7 glorious days there. The sun shone, the temperatures were perfect and life was good. John was able to go up and down the hill (and use the outhouse) without too much difficulty. Unfortunately the season is quickly changing and we will be going up soon and closing it down.

Here are some photos I took over the summer and last week. Enjoy.

Our log home in the woods. We call it “the Cabbage”. Is it a cottage, a cabin or a camp? It’s called different things depending on what part of the country you are from, so we just call it The Cabbage.

Going for a paddle while Brennan and family were still at the cottage. They come up mid July and stay till the end of August. This picture was taken of us shortly before Brennan had to return home to Cochrane, AB.

Frida, my granddaughter, found a cicada as it was just hatching out of the ground. So cool.

I took a series of photos of this particular mushroom as it grew and grew and finally died.

More “shrooms”.

The night skies were incredible. We could see the Milky Way. Can you see the Big Dipper in one of these shots? These were all taken with my iphone!!!

One morning Graeme, John and I got up early and went on a paddle to Roger Bay. It takes about 15 minutes to paddle there. Magical!!!

Loon Calls as heard from my kayak. My kayak is called Gertie. Haunting yet beautiful.

The skies can be so beautiful. It inspires me to paint. In fact, in February I am going to lead a watercolour class featuring clouds for the Seniors Friendship Club here in Deep River.

One day we took a paddle to this bay. At one point there were 9 turtles on this log. We now call it Turtle Bay.

More photos from our paddle to Turtle Bay.

Although we have a gas bbq at the cottage I never use it. I much prefer to cook over the open fire.

John and I are intermittent fasters, but when it comes to breakfast at the cottage, we tend to ignore that lifestyle choice. Hehehehe. I can’t believe we ate the whole thing. 😉

This is The Point. We sit, read, enjoy the night skies and listen to the loons from here.

We are pretty fortunate to live where we do. I no longer listen to the news, just the loons when I sip my coffee at the “Cabbage Cafe”.

Health Update - John is scheduled for right knee surgery on December 14. Christmas will be spent here in Deep River and hopefully once cottage time returns in 2027 he will be able to race up and down that hill.

I have had another Endometrial biopsy and am waiting for results. I have my fingers crossed that all is good in there. 🤞🏻 Will keep you updated.
