Remembering My Mom

My mom, June Finn, died suddenly on April 1, 2026. We’d gone to Walmart on Sunday to buy her new undies. She picked out the most colourful ones. I kissed her goodbye that day and said I’d see her in a couple of weeks — I was leaving for Mexico the next morning. She joked she wanted to come and I said her passport was expired and there wasn’t room in my suitcase. Mom died peacefully Wednesday morning. She had gone down for breakfast as usual. The staff noticed she wasn’t breathing well so followed her to her room. She died a few minutes later, sitting in her favourite chair looking out the window. Mom would have turned 95 on June 4th. We were planning for this milestone birthday and my brother Robert was planning on coming to town to celebrate with us.

On May 1, my brother Robert and my son Brennan from Alberta will be joining us not to celebrate my mom’s upcoming 95th birthday but to say a final goodbye.

Here is a short video with photos of mom over the years.

Mom died as she lived—independently and with dignity. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Jim Finn.

Mom was a long-time retiree of the CRTC, and her impact on her colleagues was legendary. Her retirement celebration 30 years ago remains a cherished story, and the fact that her former boss remained a friend three decades later is a testament to her character. She had a kind word for everyone and a smile that could light up any room.

Mom was a traveler at heart. Whether she was crossing Canada or enjoying the sunshine of Hawaii with Jim, exploring the hills of Ireland or enjoying the history of Italy with Elaine, or celebrating Krysta’s wedding with family in Arizona, she embraced every journey with enthusiasm.

She will be missed tremendously by her family and her many friends especially those at Bridlewood Trails. Mom lived a long, independent life filled with laughter, travel, and an unwavering love for those around her. She will be missed.
